treatment of cough and flu.
Star anise is rich in antioxidants and vitamins A and C, which help fight free radicals that are responsible for early ageing and diabetes.
Origin and History:
Star anise is native to southern China and Vietnam. However it has been imported and cultivated around the world. This unque spice is grown on an everygreen tree that can reach up to 45 feet tall.
Anise is one of the oldest known plants that were grown for both culinary and medicinal uses.
It was important in the 2nd century B.C. Egypt where it was grown for food, medicine and as an ingredient in liquor. Anise was one of the ingredients in mustaceus, a special cake made with digestive herbs that was served as a finishing dish for feasts. This may be the origin of the modern-day wedding cake.
In 1305, King Edward I declared anise a taxable drug and the revenue earned through its import helped repair damages to the London Bridge.
How to Use:
Star anise makes a great addition to sweet dishes and desserts, such as baked fruit, pies, quick bread and muffins.
It is often added whole to soups, stews and braising broths, to which it adds a sweet-peppery flavor. Star anise can be used whole or ground. When whole, it usually is added to liquids destined for a slow simmer or braise. It is removed and discarded from the dish before serving.
You can use star anise as a tea, or even added to your normal brew. It's as easy as steeping a piece in some hot water.
It can also be
added to a ritual bath or burned while meditating.
