The leaves of Leonotis leonurus (also known as Wild Dagga) were used by the Hottentot tribe of southern Africa because of its calming, sedative and euphoric effects.
The religion of the Hottentots is a mix of superstitious observances, of which travelers and folklorists have never been able to obtain a full explanation from the natives. The doctors are held in high esteem, and next to them the priests, who combined the duties of masters of ceremonies and surgeons in the monarchist rites. They actively sought out Leonotis leonurus, which is also known as "Wild Dagga" for its medicinal and euphoric effects.

Medical Benefits:
Also known as Klip Dagga, it has long been used in African traditional medicine as a treatment for fevers, headaches, malaria, dysentery and snakebite. It has an effect on the uterus - depending on the dose it will stimulate- or suppress menstruation. In Trinidad it is a common cold, fever and asthma remedy.
Lion's tail is a somewhat popular smoking alternative to tobacco or cannabis, giving a mild euphoric and uplifting effect. The leaves and flowers are said to aid with upper respiratory infection, anxiety, epilepsy, eczema, fever, headache, high blood pressure, muscle cramps and liver stagnation.
Origin and History:
Lion's tail, is a large broadleaf evergreen shrub belonging to the mint family. Native to South Africa where it is very common, this robust plant can reach heights of 2-3m and a 1.5 wide. This plant is commonly used in traditional medicines to treat a wide range of ailments.
In 1668 Jan Van Riebeek sent a contingent of settlers to bring back wild Dagga to be used by the Hottentots and later, in the mid-1800s, as Dutch settlers began migrating up from the Cape in South Africa, they took the herb with them.
It
can especially be found in other subtropical and Mediterranean climate regions beyond South Africa such as California, Hawaii, and Australia where it has naturalized in areas. In cooler climates it is used as an annual and winter conservatory plant.
How to Use:
Often smoked or smudged. Lion's Tail is known for its mild psychoactive effects and has been used for hundreds, posibly thouasands of years by indiginous Afican Tribes. It is most commonly smoked like cannabis in a pipe or rolled in paper but is also used as a tea.
