In traditional Wicca, salt is symbolic of the element Earth. However, some groups associate salt with Water, because of its origins in the sea. It it believed to cleanse an area of harmful, negative energy and as such is often used in purification rituals. A dish of salt and one of water are on most altars.
Ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans invoked gods with salt offerings. Some people think this to be the origin of Holy Water in Christianity.
In
ancient Rome they believed that bad luck comes from salt being spilled.
In Brahmanic sacrifices and during festivals held by Semites as well the Greeks at the time of the new moon, salt was thrown into fire to make crackling noises.
In Aztec mythology, Huixtocihuatl was a fertility goddess who presided over salt and salt water.
Salt is an auspicious substance in Hinduism and is used in ceremonies like house-warmings and weddings.
In Jainism, an offering of raw rice with a pinch of salt signifies devotion and salt is sprinkled on a person's cremated remains before burial.
Salt is believed to ward off evil spirits in Mahayana Buddhist tradition, and after a funeral, salt is thrown over the left shoulder to prevent evil spirits from entering the house.
In Shinto, salt ritually purifies. Piles of salt are placed in dishes by the entrance of businesses to ward off evil and attract patrons. Salt is even mentioned in the Old Testament thirty-five times.
In Judaism, it is recommended to have a salty bread when doing Kiddush for Shabbat. It is customary to spread some salt over the bread or to dip the bread in a little salt when passing the bread around the table after the Kiddush.
Throughout these traditions one constant rings true. Salt is sacred and should be treated as such.

Medical Benefits:
The essential minerals in salt act as important electrolytes in the body. They help with fluid balance, nerve transmission and muscle function.
From consuming salt to soaking in a bath of it - this versatile and widely used mineral has been of great importance to humans and animals for thousands of years. It's topical benefits include joint, nerve and muscle relief.
Origin and History:
Salt was vastly important in the grand scheme of human civilization. In the early days of mankind—or at least the days prior to industrialization—the process of harvesting salt was time-consuming and labor intensive. This meant that salt was a valuable commodity, and only rich people could afford it. The Romans actually paid their soldiers with salt, because it was so important for things like food preservation. In fact, the word “salary” has its root in the Latin word for salt.
The 1556 Hieroglyphica of Piero Valeriano Bolzani reports that salt was formerly a symbol of friendship, because of its lasting quality. For it makes substances more compact and preserves them for a long time: hence it was usually presented to guests before other food, to signify the abiding strength of friendship.
Although it is a little misleading, kosher salt gets its name from the Jewish practice of "koshering" meats. This includes draining all blood from the meat to prepare it for consumption, and typically this process involved using "koshering salt" to draw out the blood.
It is often easy to overlook this commonly used addition on our tables but w
ithout salt, life as we know it simply would not exist.
How to Use:
Kosher salt has a coarse and flat grain size, which makes it easy to crumble over vegetables or pinch into pasta water. Its crystal size also makes it ideal for curing meat.
A multitude of ritualistic practices include salt. Sometimes crushed up directly into a mix while in other cases simply laid down as a line of protection.
