    The original is of bronze.
Coins are first mentioned in Genesis, when Abraham gives Ephron four hundred shekels of silver current with the merchant.  Simeon, brother of Judas Maccabaeus, established the first recorded right of the Jews to strike their own coins.  His successor, John Hyrcanus I (135-104 B.C.E), exercised this right toward the end of his reign.
Temple of Jerusalem.  Heeding the Second Commandment, "You shall not make yourself a graven image..." they placed symbols on their shekels.
In response to a visit by the Emperor Hadrian, in 130 C.E. to establish a Roman colony on the ruins of Jerusalem, the Jews began a second revolt under Simeon Bar-Kochba (Son of the Star).  Having no resources of silver or bronze, he re-struck Roman and local coins.  This coin was struck on a Jerusalem coin.
The obverse shows a vine leaf and stem, circled by the inscription, "For the Freedom of Jerusalem".
The reverse shows a palm tree with two bunches of fruit and is inscribed, in ancient Hebrew, "Simeon".
