Turmeric has been used in many cultures for increasing fertility in both humans and animals. Some swear by wearing Turmeric in a charm for good health and protection.
For protective purposes in a ritual circle, Turmeric is sometimes sprinkled within its boundaries. In Hawaii, Turmeric is mixed with salt and water, then sprinkled in the area wanting purification such as a sick room or even a ritual circle.
Because Turmeric implies a symbol of purity, fertility and prosperity among the Hindus. It is used in rites and rituals. Turmeric powder along with sandal powder is used in preparing Kalabha to be poured on the presiding deities in temples.
The dried Turmeric roots in Betel leaves called Kumkum are given to the women during the ceremonies as they are considered as a fertility enhancer and bring good luck. Married Hindu women apply this on their forehead longitudinally along the hair partition path to indicate the marital status or smear Turmeric paste on either side of the cheek. Turmeric paste is applied to the skin of the bride and groom before marriage in some parts of India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan, where it is believed to make the skin glow and keep harmful bacteria away from the body. In southern India, the dried rhizome is often worn in an amulet as protection against evil and to bring about healing or good luck.

It is a potent natural anti-inflammatory and antioxidant and may also help improve symptoms of depression and arthritis. Because of this, many consider turmeric to be a super spice.
Origin and History:
The use of turmeric dates back nearly 4,000 years to the Vedic culture in India, where it was used as both a culinary spice and with religious significance.
It is rumored to have been grown in the Gardens of Babylon, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World during the 8th century B.C.
The use of turmeric as a coloring agent for food and fabric dates back to 600 B.C.
It most likely reached China by 700 A.D. and East Africa b
y 800 A.D.
Marco Polo, in 1280, mentioned turmeric in notes of his travels to China: "There is also a vegetable that has all the properties of true saffron, as well as the smell and the color, and yet it is not really saffron." In medieval Europe, turmeric was known as "Indian saffron." Since then, turmeric has been used as an inexpensive substitute for saffron.
By the 18th century, as it continued to become increasingly popular, Turmeric spread to Jamaica and other tropical locations. Today, it can also be found in Hawaii and Costa Rica.
Turmeric is best known for that bold yellow-orange color that it gives to curry. Before it was commonly used as a spice for food, it was used to as a natural dye for skin and clothing and as medicine.
How to Use:
While bright in color the flavor is somewhat mild. As such, it can be added to a vast variety of dishes and drinks. You can steep some in water to make a tea, or add a spoonful to the brew basket when making coffee. Turmeric is also commonly taken in capsules for its health benefits. It is even made into a paste to promote good health for teeth and skin.
