Afterall, it was Hippocrates who said “Let food be your medicine, and medicine be your food.” Hippocrates even applied oregano oil to treat skin infections from psoriasis and cuts, and he used it to cure stomachaches.
Medical Benefits:
Oregano may help fight bacteria, relieve inflammation, and regulate blood sugar. People around the Mediterranean region have used oregano for centuries in herbal medicine to treat many ailments, including: skins sores and aching muscles.
It is a great antibacterial agent. It has phytonutrients (thymol and carvacrol), which fight infections such as staph. It's loaded with antioxidants that help prevent cell damage, and it's an excellent source of fiber, vitamin K, manganese, iron, vitamin E, tryptophan and calcium.
Possible medicinal uses of oregano include treating respiratory disorders, gastrointestinal disorders, menstrual cramps, and urinary tract disorders. Applied topically, it helps treat a number of skin conditions.
Oregano was often steeped in hot water to create tea. With the addition of some honey, this was ancient Greeks’ cure for coughs, colds, and asthma. Made into a juice-like substance which was much more potent than tea, it was even used to cure tonsillitis. Now we know that Hippocrates was actually spot-on. Nowadays, scientists have discovered that oregano has antibiotic and antioxidant properties. Greek oregano is thought to be one of the healthiest and best of the oregano varieties in the entire world. This is because Greek oregano has high concentrations of carvacrol and thymol — which have powerful antioxidant and cancer-fighting properties. These substances can even help lower blood pressure!
Origin and History:
Oregano is the quintessential ancient Greek herb.
Although oregano is heavily associated with Italian cuisine it is likely that it originated in Greece. The word oregano comes from the Greek, meaning “joy of the mountain.” Ancient Greeks believed that cows that grazed on fields of oregano produced tastier meat, and who's to say they were wrong.
Their stories tell us about their beleif in the Goddess Aphrodite and how the herb was created by her. She wanted it to be a symbol of joy growing in her garden.
The Roman’s next adopted oregano because they enjoyed the taste and how easy is was to cultivate. Their love of the herb helped spread its use all throughout Europe and Northern Africa. In the middle ages oregano was commonly used for medicinal purposes. They would chew the oregano leaves as a cure for many ailments such as rheumatism, toothache, indigestion, and coughing fits. During this time, Oregano also made the journey to China. It was also used for medicinal purposes in this region. The Chinese people believed it helped with fever, vomiting and upset stomach.
During the Elizabethan era, oregano was used for just about anything. It was used to encourage good luck and good health. Oregano was not widely used in the United States until after the Second World War. Soldiers discovered the herb during the Italian Campaign and brought it back to the US.
