Origin and History:
Lavender is believed to have origintated from the Mediterranean, Middle East and India and is mentioned many, many times throughout history. The Romans used Lavender to scent their baths, beds, clothes and bodies.
The plant pops up in ancient history and the Bible alike. Cleopatra used its fragrance by
wearing lavender on here wrists to to seduce both Julius Ceasar and Mark Antony.
It is even claimed that the asp snake who killed her hid among her lavender bushes.
Adam and Eve are credited with bringing the plant with them when they were cast from the Garden of Eden. The Bible also tells of Judith who wore perfume containing lavender to charm Holofernes before killing him, and in the Gospel of Luke, Mary washes the feet of Jesus and anoints them with lavender ointment.
Lavender, one of the most beloved of herbs, has been is use for more than 2500 years. The Romans are credited with naming this most aromatic of herbs, some say because of its use in washing (lavare), but others believe it derives from “livendula” (bluish). In ancient Greece and India, and also in the Bible, this plant is called spikenard.
Although today, lavender is strongly associated with England , it is not native to northern Europe, but to the warmer climate of the Mediterranean. Originally, it was probably put under domesticate production in Arabia. In Egypt, Phoenicia, and Arabia, lavender was used as a perfume and for mummification. It spread from Greece into Europe around 600 BCE. The Romans made use of it in their elaborate baths. By the early middle ages, washerwomen were known as lavenders, for spreading clothes to dry upon the bushes and for scenting clean clothes in storage. It was during the the same eras that monasteries began cultivating lavender in their “physic gardens”. Hildegard von Bingen made lavender water, a mixture of lavender and gin or brandy, as a remedy for migraine.
How to Use:
Gather dried lavender buds into decorative nylon bags to create sachets you can slip into drawers and closets. These are great to scent linens and keep insects away.
As a member of the same family as many of our most popular herbs, it is not surprising that lavender is edible and that it's use in food preparation is returning. Dried flowers can be used in small quantities with your baking. Simply steep the lavender in some hot milk (or any other liquid going into your recipe), strain and incorporate a bright floral flavor into your goodies.
Lavender is also great for use in baths with salt and rosemary. The buds can be added directly to your bath water and go nicely with a multitude of other aromas.
